Group Swimming Lessons

This summer we will offer six sessions of lessons. Each session will be four days long (M-Thu with Friday as rain day) and include four lessons. There are two different levels of lessons: beginner, intermediate.

Beginner (30 minute lessons): These swimmers will be first timers, but should have some initial comfort in the water. Swimmers will get accustomed to the water and wiil work to become safe and independent swimmers. Swimmers will learn to put their faces in the water, blow bubbles, float, kick, and enter water.

Intermediate (30 minute lessons): These swimmers will already have a basic understanding of putting their faces in the water, blowing bubbles, floating, kicking (propulsion), and entering the water. Swimmers will learn basic freestyle, beginning backstroke and how to help themselves when in trouble. They will also strength their skills and general comfort in the water.

Please note the following:

1) It is advised for parents to be out of sight during lessons. Experience shows that children are able to be more successful when the parents are not within sight.

2) At the completion of each session, a recommendation will be made for the appropriate level in which your child should continue. It may not always be in your child's best interest to move up to the next level, whether that is the next level of lessons or Grinning Gators. Keeping the child comfortable, safe and feeling successful is key when teaching water skills.

Key Information:
Two to six children per class
Classes are divided by ability rather than age
Swimmers may be transitioned to a different level class based on ability.

The Grinning Gators

The Grinning Gators is a new non-competitive swim team offered for the members of Green Valley Park. Starting in the spring of 2010, we will offer a 6 week program including fun games, stroke development and water safety. This is a compliment and great segue from swim lessons into the competitive Gators team. The focus of the GG team is to provide our Gators the opportunity to participate in a socially inclusive team environment with the opportunity to improve their strokes and to enter into the competive summer league with confidence if they choose.

Coaching will be provided by Nathan Durrell. Nathan is the head site coach for Star Aquatics at the Winston-Salem Gateway YWCA and is our fantastice pool manager. He and Scot Budde, our super Gator"s head swim coach, will work together to provide a fun and physically active swim environment.

We will begin the GG team practices on Monday, June 14, 2010. Practice will be from 12:00pm until 1:00pm on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Our last week will be the week of July 25 and will possibly end with a joint fun meet with the Friendly Frogs.

The Grinning Gators will consist of swimmers from 4 years of age through 18 or the summer after senior year in high school. The ration of swimmer to coach will be no more than 10 t 1. Swimmers will be identified into two levels.

Level will begin with swimmers who are:

Able to propel their bodies a minimum of 10 feet.

Float on back assisted by instructor.

Put head underwater unassisted.

Comfortable in water in a group setting.

Level I goals are:

Swim a 25 of freestyle and backstroke.

Level II will begin with swimmers who are able to:

Successfully participate in a socially inclusive team.

Swim a 25 of freestyle and backstroke.

Level II goals are:

Swim freestyle and bakstroke multiple 25's.

Basic understanding of butterfly and breaststroke.

Rudimentary dive (egg role or seated dive).

Competitive team ready.
